Watch With Me

Jane Griner's poignant and deeply moving poem about Christ's hours in the Garden of Gethsemane is sensitively set to music by Daniel E. Gawthrop. A wonderful selection for worship services on Good Friday, at Easter, or at any time during Holy Week, this anthem will also be found effective and touching in concert at any time of year.

I used this effectively haunting piece as the central anthem during our Passion Sunday worship a few years ago. The anthem was sung after the Passion reading. The choir sang it well (which means they liked it!) and I got a lot of comments from the congregation about how it added to their worship experience. We had enough basses and altos for the split lines and my choir negotiated the tight harmonies easier than I expected them to. Where Dan has the last three measures marked "very slowly", I took this to heart, drawing out the final text "And as it fled, we slept", creating an interesting juxtaposition between the time fleeing, but fleeing in slow motion. This anthem is one of my favorites.
