Sing Me to Heaven

In 1991 Dunstan House began its operations by publishing Sing Me to Heaven for SATB a cappella chorus. This octavo has proved enormously popular in the ensuing years and remains the best selling title in our catalog. It has been recorded frequently on CDs both commercial and private, and is now one of the most frequently performed choral works written in the twentieth century. With a text that speaks to the way singers feel about music in their lives, it has become a favorite of choirs and audiences alike.

Now available in versions for mixed chorus (DH9101) and for men’s choir (DH9603).

DH9101 - Sing Me to Heaven - $2.00 -

My newly minted choral ensemble VOCE and I jointly commissioned this piece from Dan in 1990. I was new to commissioning, and asked Dan to compose a flexible and relatively short piece that would speak to singers about what music meant in their lives. Finding inadequate poetry on this subject, Dan convinced his wife, the poetess Jane Griner to write the poetry which so obviously inspired Dan's beautiful music. Were we ever pleased! It works very well in a really wide variety of choral settings. We continue to be thrilled by the number of people from all walks of life who learn to love this piece.

This is my most favorite piece I have sung. Ever. Out of all of them, this is the only one I have ever sang that brought me to tears. Multiple times, actually. It is truly wonderful. I still tear up whenever I listen to it or hear about it. Thank you so much.

We lost one of the students at my school right around the time we started learning this piece and it means more to my choir than any other piece we have ever sung.

I was given the opportunity and honor of being part of a choir who sang this song for several directors interviewing for a position at Solano Community College in Northern California. This beautiful song allowed each candidate to use us to bring out thier interpretation. It is difficult to imagine how one could not be moved by this piece.

I recently joined the Chester River Chorale in Chestertown, Maryland. Last night, we sang this beautiful song at our spring concert. What an amazing experience to sing such a MOVING piece! My Dear Ol' Dad died in September, and my Aunt last week. I sang it to them...

I performed this song in my choir class last year and fell in love with it. Everytime I hear these words it reminds me of all the loved ones I had to leave behind when I moved. It has a very good meaning to it. I would absolutly love to sing this song again.

I am a Student conductor at my high school and I found this song in the depths of our Choir Library and I told our Ladies Madrigals that were are going to be singing this, and they and myself included just adored it, this has to be the best song that I have ever conducted (and truthfully) the judges at Heritage Festival LOVED IT! So I recommend this very, very highly!! And I give props to Daniel E. Gawthrop, and the Dunstan House! :)

This is a gorgeous song. Very poetic and the chords (especially the final one) are ingenious. I'm very excited to sing this piece later in the fall at my school.
