Upon the Wings of the Wind

This festival anthem is scored for SATB chorus with organ, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, and timpani. The vivid and evocative text is adapted from Psalm 104. This piece was commissioned by the Region III Convention of the American Guild of Organists in 1991 and was premiered in the glorious chapel of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. Requires a fine organist and works best with a substantial organ and spacious acoustics.

If you are looking for an exciting, declamatory, and regal piece, Upon the Wings of the Wind deserves consideration. An adaptation of Psalm 104, this six minute piece for choir, brass, timpani and organ is ideal for excellent church choirs, superior high school choirs, choral societies and collegiate choirs. While the choral parts are medium difficulty, the tessitura and technical requirements of the brass and organ parts require advanced players. The brass, organ and timpani parts are majestic and expressive, and seamlessly partner with the vocal parts. Gawthrop masterfully contrasts the climactic moments of the piece with soft beautiful chords, text painting and sensitivity to the prosody of text. This makes the piece far more than just a powerful anthem. Upon the Wings of the Wind is a multi-dimensional experience for the listener and performer taking them from the heights of "Praise Ye the Lord" to the fathomless depths of God's love where the "Leviathan" dwell.
