Bright Journeys

This a cappella choral cycle, consisting of three love songs, is intended to be performed as a set. The text makes use of the imagery of the changing light of morning, noonday and dusk as a metaphor for the growth of a loving relationship through youth, maturity and into old age. The set was commissioned by the Concert Choir of California State University at Fresno and their director, Dr. Gary Unruh, for the dedication of their new music building. Great for a Valentine’s Day concert or general use.

Two years ago we did the [Three] Rossetti Lyrics. I found the pieces to be so very interesting. It was the essence of what I think of when I consider solid a cappella literature. It was a growing experience and challenge and joy for us to prepare and perform the three pieces. As I am learning more about your wonderful music, I decided to look for another set of pieces from you. Through your website I stumbled onto Bright Journeys. I realized that this cycle was several steps above Rossetti and the works would be a definite challenge for our community college Chamber Singers. We prepared the first [of] Bright Journeys last year. I asked the Chamber group if they wanted to take on the other two and make it a set. I was delighted at how excited the group was to prepare all three this year and how much they truly love these pieces, and so the story goes.

I realize that as a two year choral program we are able to reach a certain level and then we begin again. Our recordings are not perfect, but are a representation of what we tried to accomplish. Thankfully, they always show progress.

Above all, my students have learned, accomplished and feel very pleased that they could reach a higher plateau in their singing. How that reflects on a scale compared to other schools is not our concern. What Bright Journeys has given to us is very important.

I just wanted to share this reflection with you and hope that other directors can find as much excitement and learning in these pieces as we have.
