Two Motets on Texts by Metaphysical Poets

The two poets whose texts are used here, George Herbert and John Donne, have long been among the most popular of that group known as the "metaphysical poets," a label which seems to have originated with Dr. Johnson’s essay on Cowley. These settings of King of Glorie, King of Peace and In What Torn Ship both partake of Daniel E. Gawthrop’s typically lush harmonic language and easy, natural voice leading.

DH9901 - Two Motets on Texts by Metaphysical Poets - $2.00 -

These lovely sacred motets (with texts by George Herbert and John Donne) captivated me when I first heard them at a workshop in 1989. They are simple in form and the harmonies are gorgeous, with these early words portrayed in a beautifully expressive way. They would work well as anthems, especially during Lent, or would be an excellent choice on a concert program. They inspired me to commission Dan to compose for my choral ensemble VOCE; that piece became "Sing Me to Heaven."
